GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Installation and documentation of new and/or updated Inside Plant cable infrastructure to include conduit, cable trays, copper, coax, fiber and all associated elements in the Pentagon, Mark Center, & buildings in accordance with scope of work statements.
  • Must follow the company and commercial best practice procedures (BISCI, EIA/TIA) standards required for installation of cable racks, wiring of the racks and testing required during installation.
  • Analyzes, administers, and maintains telecommunications and network cabling infrastructure.
  • Must know the standard copper 568‐B Color code, 25 pair color code, as well as the Fiber 12 strand Color Code
  • Responsible for tasks assigned by Coordinators in connection with service orders and repair activities related to Category 6 cabling, Voice over IP networks (VOIP), and fiber optic cabling infrastructure. This includes Copper terminations on Patch Panels, Modular Plugs, Jacks as well as Fiber Splicing/Terminating single and multiple strand fiber optic cables.
  • Dress, terminate and test cables and components, Ability to work with Hand Tools, to include power tools, Powder Actuated Tools, and ladders.
  • Ability to work well with others and communicate with supervisors, Computer literate. ∙ Basic networking skills.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs voice and data communications cabling systems.
  • Interpret service orders, circuit diagrams, floor plans and networking logic diagrams. ∙ Tests, locates, installs, and repairs cabling infrastructure associated with trouble calls, and performs routine maintenance.
  • Use Excel and Microsoft Word, input data into databases and create and maintain cable ∙ records as jobs proceed and formalize at completion.
  • Verifies work order information and receipt of all necessary equipment and information ∙
  • Verifies service by testing installed cabling, identifying, correcting, or escalating problems ∙ Well versed in the use of network cabling test equipment including network testers, copper cable testers,  fiber OTDRs and fiber power meters. This includes setting up fiber testers with the appropriate test ends. Additionally, the Technician is responsible for creating the appropriate folders within the Copper and Fiber Test Equipment Master Folder.
  • Documents network by labeling and routing equipment and cables; recording configuration diagrams and specifications.
  • Maintains network by troubleshooting and repairing outages; testing network back‐up procedures; updating documentation.
  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant technologies as assigned.
  • Participates in special projects as required.
  • Identify, track, and remove abandoned cable, and keep cable neatly tied and bundled while maintaining safety standards.
  • Walking long distances for long periods of time, lifting material up to 50 pounds, loading equipment onto carts or shelves, moving equipment to work locations, unloading equipment, mounting equipment into racks and trash removal.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate degree in a related technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical training, or work experience.
  • 3‐5 years of related telecommunications experience.
  • Must be familiar with BICSI rules, regulations, and standards.
  • Must be able to use Microsoft Excel and Word, input data into databases, create and maintain cable records as jobs proceed and formalize at completion.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively to personnel of various expertise levels. ∙ Must be able to complete physical work as indicated above under responsibilities. ∙ Able to provide problem analysis and problem solving.
  • Must have strong attention to detail and accuracy.
