OVERVIEW:
We are seeking a User Experience (UX) Lead Architect to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals supporting the Department of State (DOS) Consular Systems Modernization (CSM) Program, for the Bureau of Consular Affairs (CA). This position is located in McLean/Herndon, VA. This initiative will modernize and consolidate the operational environment under a common technology framework in order to better support the services provided to CA’s customers.  
The UX Lead Architect will lead the UX/UI engineering team in the application of human centered UX/UI principles, methodologies, and technologies toward the design and development of software solutions for ConsularOne customers and users. As part of defining consistent UX/UI solutions for ConsularOne, the UX Lead Architect will define, manage, and govern the ConsularOne Design System (C1DS), which will serve as the foundation for UX/UI wireframe development. The UX Lead Architect is a hands-on, technical role to ensure UX/UI framework is in place and guidelines are followed across the program.

GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Lead the UX/UI engineering team and provide technical leadership across the CSM Program for UX/UI solutions and technical challenges
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, systems engineers, designers, developer teams and other stakeholders to research, design and ensure the build of UX/UI solutions to support customer and user vision, values and requirements
  • Define UX/UI requirements, both functional and non-functional, as high level epics, features and user stories to support SAFe Agile methodology
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend UX/UI tools to support UX/UI solution development
  • Define processes, procedures, and standards for the UX/UI engineering team to ensure consistency of UX/UI solutions across the CSM Program
  • Develop UX/UI web-based solutions that are adaptive, responsive, and compliant with 508 Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards
  • Facilitate formal and informal UX design reviews to ensure compliance with UX/UI standards, style and branding for common look and feel across all ConsularOne products and services
  • Provide leadership to the cross-functional UX teams and across discipline boundaries to deliver high-quality user experiences with common look and feel


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Computer Science, Human Factors or a related field and at least 12  years’ experience
  • At least three (3) years’ experience managing or leading a team of at least four people
  • Experience designing user interfaces for enterprise web-based software that are adaptive, responsive, and compliant with 508 WCAG standards, using standardized design components, patterns, and templates
  • Experience with full life cycle of UX/UI research, design, development and testing in an agile or Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) environment
  • Strong design fundamentals including information design, interaction design, visual design, industry UX/UI standards across platforms, and UX best practices
  • Outstanding communication, organization, time management, and interpersonal skills


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:  

  • Strong proficiency with multiple industry standard UX design tools and prototyping tools (e.g., Axure RP Pro, Adobe Creative Suite, et. al)
  • Experience using engineering environments and tools that support agile development, such as IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management (ELM), JIRA, Confluence, and/or IBM Rational Team Concert (RTC)

  • Must have a current, active Secret (or higher) clearance
